Nicaragua is a country located in the center of the Central American. It is the biggest of the Central American countries with an area of 130,373.40 Km2, and 120,254.00 Km2 of firm land extension. It has borders with:  Costa Rica 309 Km, and Honduras 922 Km.

 



The name Nicaragua comes from the Náhuatl, a dialect spoken by the settlers of ancient times. The word Nicaragua comes from Nicarao, which was the name of the cacique that ruled the country at the arrival of the Spanish conquerors. By the Náhuatl roots (NIC-ATL-NAHUAC) the name means “here next to the water".

The population of Nicaragua is of approximately 5,465,100 inhabitants. This population is divided in four ethnic groups: Mestizos 69%, White 17%, Black 9% and Amerindian 5%.

The official language of Nicaragua is Spanish, but English is the language spoken in the Caribbean In this zone, the settlers also speak Miskito and other Amerindian languages.

The National Emblem: The five volcanoes on the Emblem of the Republic symbolize the five Central American countries, the rainbow symbolizes Peace and the Phyrgian cap symbolizes Freedom.

The legal system of Nicaragua is the civil legal system; The Supreme Court has the power to review the administrative actions of the system. The voting age in the elections is 16 years old, universal suffrage.
